Summer Cleaning for Independent Adults

There’s no such thing as a bad time to declutter and clean, but summer is a hot month for cleaning. Here are a few pointers on how to clean during the summer:

  1. Make a to-do list: Make a cleaning schedule for the summer. We don’t know about you, but crossing things off a to-do list makes us feel really successful. Make a list of all the things you want to get done around your space before you start cleaning. Sanitizing high-touch surfaces, rearranging closets, and cleaning the floors are just a few examples.
  2. Scheduling time to complete the task: With the summer heat you should schedule your list to include the outside or more excessive cleaning activities for when it is cooler in the day. Scheduling the hard chores during the morning when it’s cooler will make it easier to complete those tasks.
  3. Don’t be scared to get rid of things: There is a quick method to accomplish this. Make just “yes” or “no” piles; no “maybe I’ll wear this in the summer” or “maybe I’ll fit into this if I lose some weight” heaps. Be truthful to yourself. If you haven’t worn something in over six months, it’s time to get rid of it or give it away.
  4. Ask for help: Make a request for assistance. Having someone to assist you in cleaning can keep you motivated and may even make the task more enjoyable. The first thing your family member or friend should do when they arrive to assist is go over your checklist. Another set of eyes may always provide a fresh perspective and bring out details you may have overlooked.
